For thousands of years, humans have been in relationship with stone medicine. Whether it was being used for reducing inflammation in the body, or aiding someone in having a vision, there is a living lineage of wisdom on how to connect with the mineral kingdom and benefit from its medicine. What is clear is that stones are living and possess energetic traits, which oftentimes can benefit the human body, mind, and spirit and assist us in our human experience.
Opals in particular are known to help humans who hold an intention to receive knowledge or grow as a person. One aspect of human experience that opals are said to assist in is in the dream realm. This article and the next will explore how opals can assist us in the dream realm and our personal growth.
In part 2 we’ll explore how we can receive information and visions in our dreams. Insights can benefit any person whether you are seeking direction in life, ideas for a business endeavor, or inspiration to create something beautiful. Set your intention, ask your questions in earnest, and let the opal respond. Trust in the magic!
To some, dreams are random and spontaneous and it is simply the mind making sense of the day. To others, like Native Americans, such as Black Elk, a Lakota shaman, dreams are considered a form of reality or information to be highly regarded. Black Elk became a revered medicine man of his tribe through the initiatory process of his dreams and their revelation.
Stones are excellent for focusing on specific, pre-determined subjects that you want to dream about. Directing your dream states is a natural ability for many. For Black Elk, whose tribe was struggling, was holding an intention of peace and harmony. Holding this intention, his dreams then revealed rituals to be performed by the tribe which aided in healing social tensions. In the same way, when using any stone, we can receive information especially when we state a clear intention and purpose for working with it. This will allow the medicine and message of the stone to reach you more clearly and in a practical and useful way.
In the realm of dreaming, lucid dreaming states are ones that you are aware of. You wake up in your dream. Many times, however, people might be aware that they had an amazing and insightful dream, but those memories are elusive or vague. Meditating with dreaming stones like opal before bedtime or tucking them under your pillow, can help you hold onto and tap into the wisdom you received while journeying in the dream realm.
“Stones are the oldest living things under the surface; they are literally the roots of the plants, ” says Sarah Thomas of Clarity Stone Medicine. “The positioning of stones deep under the surface and close to the core is a tip off on how stone medicine works for humans, she points out. Their medicine is to treat what is under the surface in us … all the subconscious and unconscious patterns living out through our lifetime,” she explains.
Opal is a high vibration stone so it is going to unearth or unsettle any lower energy that isn’t in resonance with it. If you start working with opal, be ready to go for a ride! Opals are known to bring any repressed emotions to the surface. In the waking state, it is normal as a means of coping that we don’t generally tune in what is happening on a deeper emotional level. Working with them in our dreams, we may be shown information and insights related to interpersonal relationships or our relationship with ourselves that we may otherwise not have been receptive to in our waking conscious state.
Containing a percentage of water, opal puts us in touch with the emotional realm and we are given a chance to observe how we are doing and bring resolution and resolve to things so we can flow, like water, down stream and be open to what life has to offer.
In the same way that water reflects, Opal can offer a reflection of what is going on within yourself and all the shades of feelings living within you. As mentioned, oftentimes it is in dreams that we sort out or process emotions or things we wouldn’t normally look at in waking life. What normally stays under the surface in waking life may show itself clearly in a dream, along with some kind of information, in order for you to gain some clarity or understanding around the dream’s meaning and how it can benefit you in day to day life.
While for some fire opal may bring a restful night sleep as mentioned above, for others fire opal may bring out fiery dreams. What happened in that dream? Who was I in conflict with? After the dream there is a certain catharsis as something you may not have said in waking life you expressed in a dream. In this way fire opal can assist someone in purging old fiery emotions that only affect the person harboring them. Once we shift those emotions, we can use our fire for a dynamic purpose, and channel it into something creative and life giving.
Instead of anger, resentment, or frustration, with the support of the opal we can now focus more on positive traits of fire, such as courage, stamina, and will power. Instead of intense orange-red colors being associated with anger, these colors can be perceived as conveying a profound sense of warmth, peace, and harmony.
